Wall Art Sculpture in Wood and Metal "Figure"
It's always fun to go through my old sketch books and complete an idea I just didn't have machinery for at the time I conceived it. But as my tool collection grows, so do the possibilities!
This elegant one of a kind piece features Eastern Ash, Black Walnut, and Figured African Mahogany. I don't often utilize Ash, as I generally gravitate towards the bolder tones of the exotics out there, but this was a perfect application for it's color and texture. The rich brown of the Walnut frames out the reddish tone of the raised Figured Mahogany panels at top and bottom.
The real focal point is the striking Metal centerpiece. I've ground soft curves into the surface of the Aluminum plate to provide an eye catching backdrop to the gun blued steel and bronze design. Thin pieces of blued steel were cut to precise lengths and captured at either end by a jet black Acetal "keeper". Progressively smaller bronze stanchions, each cut to exacting diameters, further retain the steel strips and have been hand machined to points. I always love how light plays off of metals, but it's a careful balance of proportion to make sure it remains focal while not overbearing.
Dimensions are: 42" Tall x 16" Wide X 1.5" at the tallest point off the wall.
Heavy duty D-rings hangers with 100# test wire mounted on back for simple and secure installation.
All surfaces are finished off with a rubbed out clear satin lacquer and then waxed for additional sheen and protection.
Piece is signed and dated on the back.
